Oceania
A giant lagoon, French flair and deep Kanak roots.
New Caledonia is a French territory whose main island, Grande Terre, is ringed by one of the world's largest lagoons, listed by UNESCO. Nouméa has beaches, markets and the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, dedicated to Kanak culture. Inland are red-earth forests and the Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleue, while the Île des Pins and the Loyalty Islands of Lifou, Maré and Ouvéa offer quieter, white-sand escapes.
The mood is part Pacific, part French: croissants and baguettes alongside bougna cooked in banana leaves. Life outside Nouméa is slow and rural, and tribal customs matter when visiting Kanak land. Hire a car for Grande Terre and fly or take the ferry to the islands. September to November is dry and warm; January to March is hot, humid and cyclone season.
