Niue

A raised coral rock of sea caves, chasms and swimming with whales.

Niue is one of the world's largest raised coral islands, self-governing in free association with New Zealand and reached by flights from Auckland. There are no sandy beaches to speak of; instead the coast is cut with limestone caves, arches and rock pools like the Limu Pools, Matapa Chasm, Togo Chasm and Talava Arches. Humpback whales often come close to shore from July to October.

This is one of the quietest places in the Pacific, with a small population, a welcoming community and a relaxed approach to everything. The whole island is recognised as a dark sky nation, so nights are spectacular. Hire a car or scooter to reach the sea tracks. May to October is the dry, cooler season; December to March brings heavy rain and cyclone risk.
