Kokoda Track

A wartime trail over the Owen Stanley Range

The Kokoda Track runs for about ninety-six kilometres through the rugged, jungle-covered Owen Stanley Range, between Owers' Corner near Port Moresby and the village of Kokoda. In 1942 Australian and Papuan troops fought Japanese forces along its length, and it is now a place of pilgrimage, especially for Australians. The trek usually takes eight to ten days, with steep climbs, river crossings and mud, and is walked with local guides and porters, staying in villages along the way.
