North America
A slice of France in the North Atlantic, just off Newfoundland.
Saint Pierre and Miquelon is a small French archipelago south of Newfoundland, reached by ferry from Fortune or by flights from Canada. Saint-Pierre is a compact harbour town of brightly painted wooden houses, French bakeries and cafés. A short boat trip leads to the abandoned fishing village on Île aux Marins, while larger Miquelon-Langlade has dunes, wild horses and seals in the Grand Barachois lagoon.
Life is calm and very French, with pastries and wine alongside local seafood and a strong Basque and Breton heritage. Weather is cool, foggy and changeable. July and August are the best months, with long days and the most boat trips; winters are cold, windy and quiet.
