A slice of France off Newfoundland
Saint-Pierre is the capital of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, a small French territory off the south coast of Newfoundland, the last remnant of New France. The town of brightly painted wooden houses uses the euro, has French bakeries and restaurants, and feels far from North America. The Arche museum covers the islands' fishing and Prohibition-era rum-running history, and a short boat ride leads to the abandoned village on the Île aux Marins. Miquelon and Langlade, to the north, have wild coast with seals, puffins and horses.
