The only tropical rainforest in the US forest system
El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System, covering mountains that catch heavy rain from the trade winds. Trails lead to waterfalls such as La Mina and to the Yokahú Tower, with views to the coast, and the tiny coquí frog, a Puerto Rican emblem, sings through the night. It's an easy day trip from San Juan, often combined with swimming at Luquillo Beach and the food kiosks there, and a night kayak trip to the bioluminescent bay at Fajardo.
