Wild beaches and a glowing bay
Vieques lies off Puerto Rico's east coast, and much of it is a national wildlife refuge, so its beaches are largely undeveloped. Wild horses wander the roads, and beaches such as Sun Bay and Playa Caracas have calm, clear water. The highlight is Mosquito Bay, where microscopic organisms make the water glow blue-green when disturbed; kayak tours on dark, moonless nights are unforgettable. The small towns of Isabel II and Esperanza have guesthouses and seafood restaurants. Ferries and short flights connect to the main island.
