Palestine

Ancient towns, olive-covered hills and a living history of pilgrimage.

The Palestinian territories comprise the West Bank and Gaza. Most visitors see the West Bank, usually entering via Israel or Jordan. Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity is among the oldest working churches in the world, Jericho claims to be one of the oldest cities, and Hebron and Nablus have busy old markets. Around them, terraced hills of olive groves stretch towards the Jordan Valley.

Travellers should check their government's current travel advice before planning, as conditions can change quickly and Gaza has been affected by war. Hospitality is generous, and meals of musakhan, maqluba and Nablus knafeh are highlights. Checkpoints can slow movement between towns, so allow extra time. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; Jericho stays mild in winter.
