Pilgrim town of the Church of the Nativity
Bethlehem is built around Manger Square and the Church of the Nativity, one of the oldest continuously used churches in the world, first built in the fourth century over a grotto venerated as the birthplace of Jesus. Enter through the low Door of Humility to see the restored mosaics and the grotto below. The old town's stone lanes hold olive-wood workshops, and nearby are the Milk Grotto and Shepherds' Field. East of town, the desert monastery of Mar Saba clings to the Kidron Valley.
