Serbia

Riverside nightlife, Roman ruins and monasteries in green hills.

Serbia sits at the heart of the Balkans, where the Danube and Sava meet at Belgrade. The capital's Kalemegdan fortress looks over the rivers, and the city is famous for its cafés and floating clubs. Novi Sad has the Petrovaradin Fortress, while the Danube's Iron Gates gorge, the medieval Studenica Monastery and the forests of Tara National Park show the quieter side.

Serbia runs on long meals, grilled meats like ćevapi and pljeskavica, kajmak and rakija, and a sociable late-night culture. Intercity buses are frequent. May, June, September and October are the best months; July and August are hot, though Belgrade's river beaches and floating clubs stay lively all summer, while winters are cold and grey.
