Novi Sad

A Danube fortress and a relaxed Habsburg centre

Novi Sad is a relaxed, cyclable city on the Danube with a handsome centre of Habsburg-era buildings around Liberty Square and the Name of Mary Church. Across the river, the Petrovaradin Fortress, with its clock tower whose hands are reversed, looks back across the Danube to the city. The rolling hills of Fruška Gora, dotted with Orthodox monasteries and vineyards, lie just to the south, and Sremski Karlovci is a pretty wine town nearby.
