A spotless hillside capital with a moving memorial
Kigali stretches over green hills in the centre of Rwanda and is known for its safety and cleanliness. The Kigali Genocide Memorial, built over mass graves, tells the story of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and is essential for understanding the country. Beyond it, the city has craft cooperatives, the Inema Arts Center, the Kimironko Market and cafés serving Rwandan coffee. The monthly community clean-up, umuganda, is part of civic life. It is a short drive from Volcanoes and Akagera national parks.
