Volcanoes National Park

Gorillas and golden monkeys on the Virunga volcanoes

Volcanoes National Park protects Rwanda's share of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of mostly dormant volcanoes shared with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its bamboo forests and misty slopes are home to habituated mountain gorilla families, tracked each morning with rangers from the park headquarters at Kinigi. Golden monkey treks, a hike to the crater lake on Mount Bisoke and the walk to Dian Fossey's grave at the Karisoke research site add more. Musanze is the nearest town.
