Dakar

Africa's westernmost city of music and art

Dakar occupies the Cap-Vert peninsula, the westernmost point of mainland Africa. The city is a centre of West African music and art, home to mbalax, the Musée des Civilisations Noires and the Dak'Art biennale. The African Renaissance Monument towers over the Mamelles hills, and the Corniche runs along cliffs and surf beaches such as Ngor and Yoff. Markets like Sandaga and HLM are full of fabric, and thieboudienne, the national dish of fish and rice, is everywhere. Gorée Island is a short ferry ride away.
