Mangrove channels, shell islands and baobabs
The Sine-Saloum Delta lies south of Dakar, where the Saloum River spreads into a labyrinth of mangrove channels, sandbanks and islands. Many of the islands were built up over centuries from discarded shells, some holding baobab-shaded burial mounds; Joal-Fadiouth has a village and a cemetery built on shell islands linked by a wooden bridge. Pirogue trips wind through the mangroves among herons, pelicans and kingfishers. Lodges near Toubacouta and Palmarin provide bases.
