Togo

Voodoo markets, fortress-like clay houses and green hills near the coast.

Togo is a narrow strip of West Africa that packs in a lot. Lomé has a big Grand Marché and the Akodessewa fetish market, and nearby Lake Togo leads to the old town of Togoville. Inland, the hills around Kpalimé are covered in forest, waterfalls and coffee farms, while in the north the Koutammakou landscape is known for the Batammariba's tower-like mud houses.

Togo is easy to combine with Ghana and Benin, and the pace is relaxed. Expect fufu with peanut or palm-nut sauces, grilled fish and busy street food. Some areas in the far north carry official warnings, so check your government's advice. November to March is dry and best, with the south also having a short break in the rains around August.
