Lomé

A seaside capital with a famous fetish market

Lomé stretches along the Gulf of Guinea right on the border with Ghana. The Grand Marché is run largely by women traders, some known as Nana Benz for the Mercedes cars they once favoured. The Akodessewa fetish market sells vodun charms, herbs and animal parts used in traditional medicine. The seafront boulevard is lined with palms, and the Palais de Lomé, the former governor's palace, has been turned into an art centre with gardens. Togolese food includes fufu, grilled fish and spicy sauces.
