A flat island of beaches, olive groves and old synagogues
Djerba is a low, sunny island in the Gulf of Gabès, linked to the mainland by a causeway and ferries. Its east coast is lined with sandy beaches and resort hotels, while inland are olive groves, palm trees and fortified mosques. The main town, Houmt Souk, has a covered market and a fortress on the shore. The El Ghriba synagogue, one of the oldest in Africa, reflects the island's long-standing Jewish community, and the village of Erriadh is covered in street art.
