A medina, a great mosaic museum and ancient Carthage
Tunis pairs a French-era new town with one of the finest medinas in North Africa, a UNESCO site of souks, palaces and mosques centred on the Zitouna Mosque. The Bardo Museum holds one of the world's largest collections of Roman mosaics. Avenue Habib Bourguiba, lined with cafés, leads to the medina's gate, the Bab el Bhar. A short suburban train ride away are the ruins of Carthage, the Phoenician city destroyed by Rome and rebuilt as a Roman capital, with its baths of Antoninus by the sea.
