Taiwan's oldest city and its street food
Tainan was Taiwan's capital for more than two centuries, and it has more temples per street than anywhere else on the island, including the Confucius Temple, the first in Taiwan. The Dutch built Fort Zeelandia in Anping and Fort Provintia in the city centre in the seventeenth century. Tainan is also Taiwan's snack capital: danzai noodles, milkfish congee, coffin bread and sweet shrimp rolls. Explore the old lanes of Shennong Street, and look for the Anping Tree House, a warehouse swallowed by banyan roots.
