Standing at the rim of a live volcano
Mount Yasur, on the island of Tanna in southern Vanuatu, has been erupting almost continuously for centuries, and it is one of the few active volcanoes where visitors can stand near the crater rim. Tours climb up at dusk to watch lava bombs thrown into the sky with deep booms that shake the ground. Tanna itself is one of the most traditional islands in Vanuatu, where some villages follow kastom ways of life and the John Frum movement is still active. The island also has black-sand beaches and hot springs.
