Africa
Atlantic cliffs, desert coast and a capital rebuilt on oil money.
Angola is big, little-visited and full of surprises. Luanda's seafront Marginal and the old Fortaleza de São Miguel look out over the bay, while to the south the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic at Namibe and Iona National Park. Inland, the Kalandula Falls thunder in the rainy season and the red rock towers of Pungo Andongo rise out of the savannah.
Travel here takes planning and patience: distances are long, tourist infrastructure is thin outside Luanda and costs in the capital can be high. The rewards are grilled fish on the Ilha de Luanda, Portuguese-influenced cooking and kizomba and semba music late into the night. The cooler, drier months from June to August are the most comfortable; the heaviest rain falls around March and April.
June, July, August.
