Luanda

A bay-side capital with Portuguese roots

Luanda curves around a wide bay on Angola's Atlantic coast, with the Marginal promenade running along the waterfront. The Fortaleza de São Miguel, a 16th-century Portuguese fort, houses the Museum of the Armed Forces and overlooks the city. The Ilha de Luanda, a long sandy spit, is lined with beach bars and seafood restaurants. South of the city, the Museu Nacional da Escravatura covers the slave trade, and the Miradouro da Lua shows eroded cliffs resembling a lunar landscape.
