Bosnia and Herzegovina

Old bridges, minarets and river valleys in the heart of the Balkans.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a mountainous country where Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian history meet. Sarajevo's Baščaršija bazaar sits minutes from Habsburg-era streets and the Latin Bridge, while Mostar's rebuilt Old Bridge arches over the emerald Neretva. Nearby are the Kravice waterfalls and the Blagaj dervish house, and further north the walled town of Jajce and the rivers of Una National Park.

Visitors find warm hospitality, strong Bosnian coffee, ćevapi and burek, and prices that stretch further than in neighbouring countries. Buses connect most towns, and the train between Sarajevo and Mostar is one of the region's most scenic rides. May, June and September are best; Herzegovina is very hot in midsummer, while winter brings snow and skiing to the mountains around Sarajevo.
