Sarajevo

Where East meets West in a mountain valley

Sarajevo sits in a steep valley where the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian worlds meet, a transition you can see on a single street. Baščaršija, the old bazaar, is full of coppersmiths, mosques and cafés serving Bosnian coffee, with ćevapi grilled nearby. The Latin Bridge marks the spot where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914. The Tunnel Museum and the History Museum tell the story of the city's recent past, and a cable car climbs Mount Trebević.
