A high Andean capital of gold, art and street murals
Bogotá spreads across a high plateau beneath the green ridge of Monserrate, whose summit, reached by cable car or funicular, gives a view across the whole city. La Candelaria, the colonial quarter, holds the Plaza de Bolívar, colourful houses and the Botero Museum. The Museo del Oro displays tens of thousands of pre-Hispanic gold pieces and is one of the great museums of the Americas. Graffiti tours reveal an energetic street art scene, and on Sundays the Ciclovía closes main roads to cars. Warm up with ajiaco, a chicken and potato soup.
