Pine forests and painted mountain churches
The Troodos Mountains rise in the centre of Cyprus, offering cool air and pine forests when the coast is hot. Ten small Byzantine churches here are listed by UNESCO for their painted interiors, hidden behind plain exteriors with steep wooden roofs. Hike to Caledonia Falls or up Mount Olympus, the island's highest point, and visit Kykkos Monastery. Villages such as Omodos and Kakopetria are known for local wine, halloumi and stone houses.
