Kutná Hora

A silver-mining town and its bone chapel

Kutná Hora grew rich on silver mining in the Middle Ages, and for a time rivalled Prague in importance. Its Cathedral of St Barbara is a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture, with flying buttresses and tent-like roofs. The town's best-known sight is the Sedlec Ossuary, a small chapel decorated with the bones of tens of thousands of people, including a chandelier. The Italian Court, once the royal mint, and a medieval mine are also open to visitors.
