Windmills, junipers and a bishop's castle
Saaremaa is Estonia's largest island and has kept a slower, rural pace. Kuressaare, the main town, is dominated by its fortified episcopal castle, the best-preserved medieval castle in the Baltic states. Around the island are the Angla windmills, the Kaali meteorite crater, the limestone Panga cliffs and villages of stone walls and thatched roofs. Juniper grows everywhere, and the local beer and smoked fish are worth seeking out. A short ferry from the mainland reaches Muhu first, then a causeway leads on to Saaremaa.
