Estonia's university town and intellectual heart
Tartu has been Estonia's university town since 1632, and students set its easy rhythm. The Town Hall Square slopes towards the Emajõgi river, with its leaning house and the kissing students fountain, while Toome Hill holds the ruined brick cathedral and shady parks. The Estonian National Museum, in a dramatic long building on a former Soviet airfield, tells the nation's story well. Supilinn, the Soup Town district of wooden houses named for its vegetable street names, is good for a wander.
