Micronesia

Ancient stone cities, sunken fleets and four very different island states.

The Federated States of Micronesia spreads across a huge stretch of the western Pacific in four states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. Pohnpei hides Nan Madol, a ruined city of basalt islets built on a reef, and Kosrae has the stone walls of Lelu. Chuuk Lagoon holds dozens of Second World War shipwrecks, and Yap is famous for its giant stone money and manta rays.

This is a trip for divers and curious travellers rather than resort-seekers: small hotels, simple food built on fish, taro and breadfruit, and strong local customs, especially on Yap. Each state feels like its own country, linked by island-hopping flights. It is warm and humid all year and Pohnpei is one of the wettest places on Earth; January to April tends to be driest.
