Pohnpei

Rain-forested island and the ruins of Nan Madol

Pohnpei is a green, rain-soaked volcanic island in the Federated States of Micronesia, and home to the national capital, Palikir. Its great wonder is Nan Madol, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a ceremonial centre of nearly a hundred artificial islets built from huge columns of basalt off the island's east coast, once the seat of the Saudeleur dynasty. The island's interior is covered in rainforest and waterfalls such as Kepirohi, and the reefs offer good diving and surfing at Palikir Pass.
