The world's greatest wreck dive
Chuuk Lagoon, formerly Truk Lagoon, was a major Japanese naval base in the Second World War. In February 1944 an American air attack, Operation Hailstone, sank dozens of ships and destroyed many aircraft, and they now lie on the lagoon floor as an underwater museum. Wrecks such as the Fujikawa Maru and the San Francisco Maru still hold trucks, tanks, guns and aircraft parts, overgrown with coral. Most visitors come to dive, often on liveaboard boats, and it is a place to treat with respect.
