Accra

Ghana's energetic seaside capital

Accra is Ghana's capital and its liveliest city, strung along the Gulf of Guinea. Independence Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park mark the country's independence in 1957, the first in sub-Saharan Africa from colonial rule. Jamestown, the old fishing quarter, has a lighthouse and colonial forts, and the Makola Market is a crush of fabric and food. Osu and East Legon have restaurants, bars and galleries, and jollof rice, kelewele and grilled tilapia are the city's classics.
