Kumasi

The seat of the Asante kingdom

Kumasi is the historic capital of the Asante kingdom, whose king, the Asantehene, still holds court at the Manhyia Palace, where a museum covers the kingdom's history. Kejetia Market is one of the largest in West Africa, a maze of stalls selling everything from kente cloth to cooking pots. Surrounding villages specialise in crafts: Bonwire for kente weaving, Ntonso for adinkra printing and Ahwiaa for woodcarving. Traditional Asante shrines nearby are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
