A baroque wine town with a famous castle
Eger is a handsome baroque town in the hills of northern Hungary, famous for the defence of its castle against an Ottoman army in 1552, a story every Hungarian knows. Walk the castle walls, climb the slender minaret, a relic of the later Ottoman period, and visit the Lyceum with its astronomical tower and camera obscura. In the Valley of the Beautiful Women, wine cellars dug into the hillside pour Egri Bikavér, known as Bull's Blood.
