Haifa

Terraced gardens falling down Mount Carmel to the sea

Haifa climbs from its working port up the slopes of Mount Carmel, and its landmark is the Bahá'í Gardens, nineteen terraces of lawns and flower beds descending to the gold-domed Shrine of the Báb. The German Colony below, built by nineteenth-century Templers, is lined with restaurants, and the Wadi Nisnas neighbourhood has a busy market. Haifa makes a good base for the Crusader port of Akko across the bay and the Galilee, including Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee.
