Tel Aviv

Bauhaus boulevards on a Mediterranean beach

Tel Aviv was founded in 1909 on the dunes north of the ancient port of Jaffa, and its centre, the White City, holds thousands of Bauhaus and International Style buildings recognised by UNESCO. Life runs along the long beach promenade and shaded boulevards such as Rothschild, with cafés, bars and restaurants that keep late hours. The Carmel Market is the place for street food, and a walk south along the sea leads to Jaffa's old stone lanes, flea market and harbour.
