Africa
Surf beaches, rainforest and a history bound up with America.
Liberia, founded in the 19th century by formerly enslaved people from the United States, has a history unlike its neighbours. Monrovia's Providence Island marks where settlers first landed. The coast has surf breaks at Robertsport and beaches near the capital, while Sapo National Park protects one of the largest remaining areas of Upper Guinean rainforest, home to pygmy hippos and chimpanzees.
Tourist infrastructure is still developing, so travel involves rough roads, simple guesthouses and flexibility. Food is hearty, with rice, cassava leaf, palm butter and pepper soup. The dry season from November to April is the best time to visit; June to August brings very heavy rain, and Monrovia is one of the wettest capitals in the world.
