Liberia's Atlantic capital on Cape Mesurado
Monrovia was founded in the 1820s by the American Colonization Society as a settlement for freed African Americans, and Providence Island, in the Mesurado River, marks where the first settlers landed. The city stretches along Cape Mesurado, where Ducor Hill offers views over the ocean. The National Museum covers the country's history, and Waterside Market is the commercial hub. Beaches line the coast, and Sapo National Park, one of West Africa's largest rainforests, lies in the south-east.
