A basalt peak above the island's finest lagoon
Le Morne Brabant is a steep basalt mountain on the south-west tip of Mauritius, and it became a refuge for escaped enslaved people in the 18th and 19th centuries, which is why it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A guided hike to the summit gives a view over the lagoon and reef. Below it, the peninsula has some of the island's best beaches, lined with resorts, and is one of the world's top kitesurfing spots. From the air, the reef appears to form an underwater waterfall offshore.
