Port Louis

A harbour capital of markets and many cultures

Port Louis sits on the north-west coast of Mauritius, backed by a ring of mountains. The Central Market is packed with spices, tropical fruit and stalls selling dholl puri and alouda. Aapravasi Ghat, a UNESCO site, is the immigration depot where hundreds of thousands of indentured labourers, mostly from India, arrived in the 19th century. The Caudan Waterfront has shops and cafés, the Blue Penny Museum holds rare Mauritian stamps, and Fort Adelaide overlooks the city. Chinatown and the Jummah Mosque show more of the island's mix.
