Africa
A freshwater lake like an inland sea, and some of Africa's friendliest welcomes.
Lake Malawi runs down much of the country's length, clear enough for snorkelling among colourful cichlid fish at Cape Maclear and fringed by quiet beaches on Likoma Island. Away from the water there's Liwonde National Park on the Shire River, the rolling grasslands of the Nyika Plateau and the granite massif of Mount Mulanje, one of the best hikes in southern Africa.
Malawi is compact, unhurried and rewarding for travellers who take it slowly, with lakeshore lodges, grilled chambo fish and nsima at every meal. Safaris here are quieter than in bigger-name neighbours. The dry season from May to October is best, with September and October hot but excellent for wildlife; December to March brings heavy rains and muddy roads.
