Liwonde National Park

Hippos and elephants along the Shire River

Liwonde National Park runs along the Shire River in southern Malawi, which flows out of Lake Malawi. Boat safaris are the highlight, gliding past large pods of hippos, crocodiles and elephants coming down to drink, with fish eagles and kingfishers overhead. The park has been restocked with species including black rhinos, lions and cheetahs as part of a major conservation effort. Mopane woodland, palm savannah and marshes give a variety of habitats for game drives and walks.
