A green, spread-out capital
Lilongwe is Malawi's capital, a spread-out city divided between the Old Town and the newer Capital Hill. The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, set in woodland near the river, rescues and rehabilitates animals and has trails through the forest. The Old Town market sells produce, fabric and second-hand goods, and craft stalls sell wood carvings. The Kamuzu Mausoleum commemorates the country's first president. Most visitors pass through on the way to the lake or to parks such as South Luangwa in Zambia.
