Colca Canyon

Condors soaring above one of the world's deepest canyons

The Colca Canyon, a few hours from Arequipa, is nearly twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, its slopes lined with pre-Inca farming terraces still in use. Villages such as Chivay and Yanque have colonial churches and hot springs, and women wear the region's embroidered hats. The classic sight is at Cruz del Cóndor in the morning, when Andean condors glide up from the canyon on the rising air. Multi-day treks descend to the green oasis of Sangalle at the canyon floor. The road crosses a high pass over 4,800 metres.
