Hunza Valley

Apricot orchards below seven-thousand-metre peaks

Hunza is a high valley in the Karakoram, ringed by peaks such as Rakaposhi and Ultar Sar, and reached along the Karakoram Highway. The village of Karimabad is overlooked by Baltit Fort, and the older Altit Fort perches on a cliff above the river. Terraced fields and apricot orchards turn pink with blossom in spring and gold in autumn. Further up the valley, the turquoise Attabad Lake formed after a 2010 landslide, the Passu Cones rise above the road, and the highway climbs on to the Khunjerab Pass at the Chinese border.
