Sighișoara

A lived-in medieval citadel in Transylvania

Sighișoara's medieval citadel, a UNESCO site, is still inhabited, its colourful houses and cobbled lanes enclosed by walls and guild towers. The Clock Tower is the town's symbol, with a museum inside and views from the top. A covered wooden staircase climbs to the Church on the Hill. Vlad III, the prince who inspired Dracula, is said to have been born here. The fortified Saxon churches of villages such as Biertan make an excellent side trip.
