Nubian pyramids, the meeting of two Niles and endless desert horizons.
Sudan holds more pyramids than Egypt. The steep royal tombs of Meroë rise from the sand north of Khartoum, and Jebel Barkal, a sacred table mountain, stands above ancient temples near Karima. Khartoum grew up where the Blue and White Niles meet, while on the Red Sea coast the coral town of Suakin and the reefs off Port Sudan are known to divers.
Travellers should check their government's current travel advice before planning; Sudan is affected by armed conflict and most governments advise against all travel. Its people have a strong reputation for hospitality, with strong coffee spiced with ginger and ful medames at breakfast. Climate-wise, November to February is the most comfortable period, while May and June bring extreme heat.
