Meroë

Steep Nubian pyramids among desert dunes

Meroë was the capital of the Kingdom of Kush, which ruled along the Nile for centuries and for a time controlled Egypt itself. Its royal cemeteries hold around two hundred pyramids, smaller and far steeper than those of Egypt, rising from orange sand dunes. Many have small chapels at their base carved with reliefs of kings and queens. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is often combined with the temples of Naqa and Musawwarat es-Sufra nearby.
